The Johnsons Way - From Your Ethical Hotel Bedding Supplier

At Stalbridge Linen Services, we’ve prioritised sustainability and ethical practices with The Johnsons Way - read on to find out more about our approach.

In the modern world, commercial linen providers have a responsibility to look out for the planet and their workforce as they strive to develop a company culture to be proud of. This is particularly important here at Stalbridge Linen Services, where we’re always looking to improve our approach to business by foregrounding sustainability and community engagement.

A big part of our commitment to an ethical business culture is The Johnsons Way, which sets out the key pillars of our conscientious working environment. In recent years we have cut carbon emissions, conserved water and overhauled our supply chains in order to reduce our environmental impact. We’ve combined this with our efforts to support our staff to flourish at our company, where we believe that maintaining a happy workforce is the best way to achieve business success.

Read on to find out more about The Johnsons Way, with a look at our various commitments to environmental and social change.

Understanding The Johnsons Way

The Johnsons Way is our current company strategy which addresses the material issues outlined by our stakeholders, with a focus on four essential areas. These include:

Our Family

We want to take care of our workforce and create the best environment for our employees to flourish, where we hope to achieve this with staff development programmes and diversity commitments across our company.

As part of this, our goal is to reach 25% female representation at senior management level, where we also wish to develop the Johnsons Academy in order to provide lifelong learning pathways for our staff.

Our World

We want to prioritise sustainability across all our operations, where this will include promoting a circular approach to resource management and foregrounding our efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

In order to achieve these commitments, we will endeavour to reduce water consumption at all levels, as well as the quantities of waste we send to landfill. A focus on recycling plastics and end of life textiles will also help us to manage our environmental impact.

Our Integrity

At Stalbridge, we want to prioritise business integrity as we develop. This means making a commitment to improving our operational practices on every level in order to safeguard our future stability.

We aim to achieve this by launching a range of ethical business training initiatives in order to support our updated Code of Conduct, as well as building an effective Supplier Sustainability framework for all levels of our organisation.

Our Communities

As we develop, we’re also looking to support the communities that we impact and work with as part of our everyday operations. This means reaching out to form collaborative partnerships in the areas that surround our business hubs.

We will achieve this by supporting collaborative and community efforts in our local areas, as well as sponsoring the fundraising efforts undertaken by our employees. In addition to this, we are committed to increasing our social value spending as a percentage of our revenue.

Sustainable Changes At Stalbridge

In practical terms, The Johnsons Way is designed to improve our operations at every level. As we conserve energy, we can reward our customers with lower costs, whilst better supply chain management means we can improve the quality of our linen products. Beyond this, we appreciate that our clients want to work with an ethically minded linen supplier, where we offer peace of mind with our commitment to business integrity.

More specifically, our sustainability goals are having a real world impact across our company, where we’ve drastically reduced waste production and energy consumption in the two years since the launch of our latest development strategy. Some of our achievements are discussed below, where these reflect a commitment to the pillars that form The Johnsons Way.

Carbon Emissions

Our collective efforts to tackle climate change have culminated in a 24% reduction of the intensity of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions. Part of this achievement comes down to our experiments in alternative fuels for our delivery trucks, where we’ve invested in heavy goods vehicles that can be powered by both diesel and sustainable biofuels.

As we look towards the future, we’re considering how we can upgrade our facilities to boost energy efficiency. We’re looking to further implement the Precautionary Principle across our operations, where this should help us to achieve our vision of reducing our emissions intensity by 40% by 2030.

Waste

Another big part of our sustainability endeavours revolves around waste management, where we’re looking to reduce the quantities of waste we send to landfill. Harmful handling of resources leads to an overconsumption of finite materials, where landfill sites contribute to the release of harmful greenhouse gases.

We’ve overhauled our waste disposal practices, where we’re proud of the fact that 74% of our waste is currently diverted from landfill, with 56% being reused or recycled. In addition to this, we’ve introduced paper or compostable plastic packaging across our operations, which makes a big contribution to our waste reduction goals.

Water

As a commercial laundry provider, water consumption is a big part of our everyday operations. Therefore we understand how important it is to conserve resources in this area, where we’ve begun an overhaul of our facilities to reduce waste and recycle our water.

We’re working to conserve our resources on all levels, where we’ve managed to reduce water intensity by 10% per tonnes of weight processed. We also consistently recycle around 70% of processed water on our new water conservation site, where we’re looking to expand this technology to other facilities as we develop.

Textiles

Another essential part of our business is linen production, where this is an area in which we’ve been looking to conserve resources and also to boost the integrity of our supply chains. This involves a focus on ethical practices, where we want our productivity to grow alongside corporate responsibility.

Part of this has involved completing a sustainability audit of 76% of our Tier 1 suppliers, to ensure our suppliers are just as environmentally conscious as we are. In addition to this, 52% of our textiles are now manufactured according to Better Cotton standards, where this figure has doubled compared to the previous year.

Benefits For Your Business

An essential part of The Johnsons Way is that the environmental benefits that we’re striving towards will in turn help your business. There are a myriad of ways in which this can become a reality, where some of the advantages to be gained include:

Future Proofing

Working with a linen provider that is committed to sustainability can help to safeguard the future of your own business. Because of predicted energy shortages that may be just around the corner, now is the time to set up sustainable alternatives to avoid costly supply chain disruption. Making sustainable choices also helps to safeguard you from potential criticisms when it comes to the ethical and environmental standings of your partners.

Environmental Compliance

As we progress, environmental legislation is likely to get stricter, especially when it comes to reducing the energy consumption of big businesses. As such, if your suppliers are already prioritising sustainability, then you won’t be impacted by new rules and regulations that could easily trip up your competitors.

Attracting Investors

Working with an ethically minded linen supplier is also a great way to attract new investors and partnerships. Lots of investment companies are on the lookout for green companies to back, where you could become a trailblazer in your industry by putting sustainability at the forefront of your company culture.

Brand Enhancement

Customers today are looking to buy from companies that have prioritised the environment at all levels of their business. As such, working with a linen service that is trying to overhaul its operations with sustainability in mind can only reflect well on your own business when it comes to creating an attractive brand identity.

Reduced Costs

As Stalbridge makes their operations more energy efficient, they will gradually be able to reduce costs over time. Although working with a sustainable provider may be more expensive initially, in the long term you will reap the benefits of your investment, especially as non-renewables become increasingly pricey and harder to source.
